Un éditorial intitulé "ASM Journals Eliminate Impact Factor Information from Journal Websites" vient d'être publié simultanément (septembre 2016) par plusieurs revues (Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy, Applied and Environmental Microbiology, Clinical Microbiology Reviews, Infection and Immunity, Journal of Clinical Microbiology, mBio, mSphere, and mSystems).
L'agonie du facteur d'impact se poursuit très lentement. Des actes forts comme celui des revues de l'ASM vont faire réfléchir des communautés scientifiques. Les facteurs d'impact ne seront ni affichés sur le site web, ni utilisés pour de la promotion. Ces revues ASM espèrent qu'elles seront imitées. Ce sont des revues prestigieuses, avec de bons facteurs d'impact dans la discipline. L'éditorial est simple et clair :
- There are a number of problems with this approach. First of all, the journal IF is a journal-level metric, not an article-level metric, and its use to determine the impact of a single article is statistically flawed since citation distribution is skewed for all journals, with a very small number of articles driving the vast majority of citations ;
L'édito explique les effets pervers du facteur d'impact et se termine ainsi :
- Our goal is to avoid contributing further to the inappropriate focus on journal IFs. Although this action by itself may have little effect on a practice that is deeply entrenched in the biological sciences, we hope that removing IFs from ASM journal websites makes a statement of principle that will be emulated by other journals.
Des communautés scientifiques restent sourdes à ces messages, mais quelques rares experts ont compris, même s'ils ne font rien pour éliminer cet indicateur. Rappelons que le Journal de Traumatologie du Sport avait aussi évoqué la tragédie des biens communs, mentionnée dans l'édito des revues ASM ! J'ai beaucoup écrit sur ces effets pervers du facteur d'impact… que va-t-il devenir depuis qu'il a été vendu par Thomson Reuters à des financiers ?
L'American Academy of Microbiology a aussi publié fin août 2016 un rapport "Promoting Responsible Scientific Research" avec les recommandations suivantes :
- Design rigorous and comprehensive evaluation criteria to recognize and reward high-quality scientific research.
- Require universal training in good scientific practices, appropriate statistical usage, and responsible research practices for scientists at all levels, with training content regularly updated and presented by qualified scientists.
- Establish open data as the standard operating procedure throughout the scientific enterprise.
- Encourage scientific journals to publish negative data that meet standards of quality.
- Agree upon common criteria among scientific journals for retraction of published papers, to provide consistency and transparency.
- Strengthen research integrity oversight and training.
