C’est en accès ouvert dans Communications Engineering du groupe Nature le 27 mai 2025 avec ce titre : What makes a great engineering paper? Editorial insights into impact. En pratique, c’est un éditorial anonyme écrit à partir de l’avis de 25 rédacteurs du groupe Nature : But how about an engineering research paper in particular? For our third anniversary editorial, we decided to explore this question with the hope of offering insights that could be useful for those who may be new to writing research papers, or who might appreciate some fresh perspectives.
Differences between science and engineering research
80 % des répondants ont dit qu’une recherche dans les sciences de l’ingénieur différaient des autres recherches : But the most frequent responses we received were that engineering research provides solutions to open questions and/or demonstrates application value.
Fundamental features
La reproductibilité est un point clé : Editors pointed out that data and code sharing increase a paper’s impact because this also enables others to repeat and build on the findings. (Many journals have policies on data and code sharing.
Research achievements
Il y a six points et les deux premiers sont :
- A paper that solves a genuine problem
- Creativity and conceptual interest: a paper that explores previously unimagined possibilities.
Il y a un conseil qui est de commencer d’écrire le plus tôt possible.
Communication and presentation
Les six points sont utiles pour nous tous :
- Contains a clear problem statement and a clear impact statement.
- Gives proper context for the advance, explains the specific advances beyond prior work and provides the relevant references.
- Explores the constraints or limitations as well as the opportunities. Limitations are not weaknesses: no solution is perfect. What you can’t solve can inspire other engineering researchers.
- Contains well-structured display items and thoughtful figure legends. For example, both photos (where possible) and schematics help readers understand key features and concepts.
- Uses supporting videos to bring ideas to life. Not everyone finds it easy to read long, complex documents.
- Clarity in the writing: simple language, short sentences, concise, limited number of abbreviations.

Il me parait très dommageable que la vulgate persiste à promouvoir : « question inédite, innovation, imagination, bénéfice espéré ».
Cela exclut malheureusement la part plus cruciale, la moins valorisée par les institutions, négligée par les chercheurs et, pire, méprisée par les éditeurs – surtout les plus glorieux.
Il s’agit, bien entendu, de l’indispensable réplication de résultats antérieurs, explicitant l’utilité concrète de leur confirmation ou infirmation.
